Ephemeral Flowers, 2022, $3000

I am interested in creating a visual experience of the passage of time and the sense of impermanence...things moving, transforming, disassembling. Using mixed media including watercolors and acrylic paint, I attempt to make visible the feeling of wind blowing through my materials, hinting at the idea that a natural force is at work. I often employ organic, plant-like shapes as symbols of both impermanence and renewal. This series, comprised of transparent washes of watercolor and acrylic paint on Bamboo Mixed Media paper, is an experiment in color created as I work on larger paintings. I decided to turn the color studies into symbols of flowers and think of them as Ephemeral plants. Those that emerge in favorable conditions like the Spring but quickly die back to their underground parts after a short growth phase. Their life cycles are timed to exploit short periods when resources are freely available. I admire their resilient nature and the generations that it took for them to develop the traits which enable them to adapt to their environment.
