As part of the development process for my oil paintings, I arrange and photograph many beautiful floral compositions. Because I ultimately select only one arrangement for these larger oil paintings, many other captivating images never make it to canvas. In this collection, I wanted to showcase some of these hidden beauties. This suite of five magnolia paintings explore a gestural style and expressive paint applications. Possessing the qualities of sketches, they emphasize movement, texture and form. The works explore the space between an artist sketchbook and finely rendered painting by exploring a range of artistic paint applications.
