About the artist...
"In my work I’m primarily interested in geometry, color theory, pattern and optical phenomena. From these disciplines, I try to determine whether an image that initially seemed straightforward is in fact rather less so. Does a given shape resolve itself into three dimensions, or remain a two dimensional pattern? Is a composition symmetrical or follow some other pattern logic? I hope that the work I make might elicit multiple contrasting interpretations when given a second, closer look.
I owe a great deal to the hard edge painters John McLaughlin, Ludwig Sanders, and the post-geometric painter Carmen Herrera among many others."
A New Yorker for many years, Eric Varner now lives and works in Austin, Texas.
