We are thrilled to present this virtual tour for Janel Jefferson's solo show. Scale is so important to her work, it's nice to be able to see them in situ. Their powerful presence can be felt, but not as much as in person. We highly encourage you to come see this show. Her collage work just does not translate over the web. The hats are created with woven straw and dried flowers that give the pieces a 3 dimensional feel. Throughout African American art history, materials from the land have been re-purposed in quilts, painting, sculpture, etc. It is thought that this tradition originated in African and early slave culture where it was believed that the land contained the spirit, as that was where bodies were laid to rest. I like to think that these natural elements in Janel's work are what give her portraits, inspired by antique photographs of generations long passed, a timeless physical presence.
